Sandra Keen for Richmond Park
I have lived in Richmond borough all my life, growing up on wonderful council estates in Kew and Whitton and moving to Ham in 2001, after the birth of my first two children. I had my third child in 2002 and all three have grown up here and attended local primary and secondary schools.
My parents instilled in me the socialist values of compassion, fairness, cooperation, equality of opportunity and justice and these inform my day-to-day life. I grew up in the Thatcher era so, fearing a return to a Conservative government, I joined the Labour Party in 2010 and have been an active member since.
I have a degree in History from Roehampton University and I completed a master’s degree as a mature student in Contemporary British History from King’s College. My studies and research focused on the causes of historical working-class poverty in London, as well as the UK social policy and the welfare state.
I am a committed socialist and trade unionist. I work as a disability benefits advisor locally and I was also a local trade union rep for the GMB union. I am one of the Vice-Chairs of Richmond Park Labour Party, the Secretary of Ham, Petersham and Richmond Riverside branch and was a candidate in the 2018 local council elections. I have done a lot of work with comrades from neighbouring CLPs on issues related to social housing and private renting in South West London.
